Tsunami In South East AsiaLast Updated: 2-Jan-2005 Dear one and all Well, it's hard to describe all the emotions of this last week, but for some reason it seems even harder to find out what to do and how to help? We all want to help - but how? If we could, we would give everyone scubagear, plane tickets, you name it, pretty much give them back their way of lives before the earthquake on the 26th December. The problem is we can't and things are not going to be the same. We have to accept that forces out of our control have changed all that, at least for the time being. We feel that whilst we as individuals cannot do much in a financial way, we can try and influence the companies and organisations that can. We have written emails to a number of organisations including PADI, SDI/TDI, SSI, Scubapro, Zeagle and some of the diving magazines in the hope that they can provide the help and assistance that we aren't able to. What we are trying to do is to encourage them to either provide some sort of financial support, waiving of annual fees, or providing replacement equipment so that our friends, both westerners and Thai's, can start to rebuild their lives in some way sooner rather than later. We realise that this disaster has not only hit the west coast of Thailand, but has affected many areas in South East Asia and that these areas will be supported by the larger aid organisations who will understandably be focusing on dealing with the bigger picture of returning stability to the areas hit, reducing the risk of further deaths and the outbreak and spread of disease. What they are not likely to be concerned with are the westerners or their Thai families and staff whose livelihoods have been taken away overnight. This is the area in which we would like to focus our efforts and provide whatever support that we can. We would like to encourage you to write similar mails, please do not hesitate to copy and paste this mail adding any thoughts or feelings of your own. A list of the respective email addresses can be found on the website that we have set up www.diveaid.org.uk, where individual contributions/donations can be made should you wish to help. Many thanks.
